Mount Sinai - St. Cathrine

A minibus will pick you up from your accomodation at 10pm and will take you to St. Cathrine which is around 1.5-2 hours drive from Dahab.

The climb up Mount Sinai is around 4-5 hours, reaching a height of 2,285 metres – where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments.

The final stretch includes the famous 750 steps, carved from the mountain’s rocks.

Once you reach the top, you will wait for the sunrise there.

Once the sun rises, you’ll have time to check out Moses’ cave, the church, and the mosque (masjid) at the summit.

After the descent, you’ll visit the St Cathrine Monastery. It’s one of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world and home to the burning bush, where Moses is believed to have spoken to God.

Pro Tips for Your Trip:

  • Pack Light, But Smart: Water, snacks, and warm clothes are essentials. You’ll thank yourself for packing light when you’re climbing those stairs!

  • Rent a Blanket: It might seem unnecessary at first, but it gets cold up there. Blankets can be rented for 150 EGP, and trust me, you’ll be happy you did.

  • Camels Are an Option: You can grab a camel ride at any point if the climb becomes too tough – just remember, they won’t take you up the final set of stairs!

  • Be Kind to the Bedouins: On your way down, you might meet young Bedouins selling small items. They’re always happy to receive snacks or little gifts if you decide not to buy anything from them.

  • Take Your Passport: It’s important to carry your passport with you, as it will be required at checkpoints along the way to St. Catherine.

  • Tips for Guides: Your Bedouin guide works hard to make sure you have a great experience, so it is nice to tip them in the end.

  • Cafeteria Breaks: There are four stops on the way up, each with small cafés where you can buy hot drinks, water, and snacks. Prices are higher than in Dahab because everything has to be carried up the mountain.

  • Moses’ Cave, The Church & The Masjid: The guide will let you know how long you have before heading back down, so you can snap pictures, shoot videos, and explore these spiritual landmarks. Just a heads up – you’ll need to take off your shoes to enter Moses' cave and the masjid.

  • St. Catherine’s Monastery: Just make sure you’re dressed appropriately – shoulders covered and shorts or skirts that reach the knees. No need to cover your hair, ladies, but everyone must show respect.

If you’re ready for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, climbing Mount Sinai and visiting St. Catherine’s Monastery should be on your bucket list! The sunrise view from the summit is magical, and if you book with us, we’ll make sure your guide takes you to the VIP spot for the best view!
